The top scorer in the Euro Cup is the “own goal”

* There are now nine goals against in 41 games***

Euro 2024 is now reaching its long-awaited finale and is in the round of 16. A total of nine own goals have been scored so far in the tournament, outstripping the tournament’s top scorers, who each have three goals: Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Ivan Schranz (Slovakia) and Jamal Musiala (Germany).

Another unusual fact in this edition of the Euros is that the goals disallowed for Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, who is already out of the competition, are also equal to the tournament’s top scorers, with three now disallowed. Two in the debut against Slovakia and another against Romania.

Italy, Turkey, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Albania, the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium have so far suffered own goals. The latest was scored by Jan Vertonghen, who gave the French team the lead against the Belgians after a failed attempt to close down a dangerous chance for their opponents.
