The head of the technical team on the Corona virus at the World Health Organization, Maria Van Kerkhove, stressed that “the time has come for a realistic review of the Corona virus epidemic,” following recording one million deaths from the disease this year.
In a direct dialogue via the social media channels of the World Health Organization, Kerkhov explained that this outcome is “heartbreaking”, because tests, treatments, vaccines and public health measures are all available to control the virus, continuing, “Since we are in the third year of the outbreak of the epidemic, it is more tragic because we have Tools that can actually prevent these deaths.”
“We should not be in a situation where 14,000 to 15,000 people die every week,” said Maria Van Kerkhove, stressing that “the epidemic is not over yet, but it can be put to an end while people continue to live their daily lives.”
And the World Health Organization official added, “We just need some extra thinking regarding that, to be a little more careful.. A lot of people talk regarding coexisting with the Corona virus, but we have to live with it responsibly.”
And she continued, warning, “One million deaths this year are not coexistence with the Corona virus, and to have 15,000 deaths per week is not considered coexistence with Covid responsibly,” as the latest WHO statistics revealed that the Corona virus caused the death of 6.45 million people worldwide. Since the first infections appeared at the end of the year 2019 in Wuhan, China, more than 5.3 million new infections were reported to the United Nations organization last week.
In this regard, Maria Van Kerkhove explained, “These are huge numbers, and this is an underestimate,” given that home tests do not enter the data, adding, “We see that this virus is spreading intensively around the world.”
