The Thrilling Evolution of Anime on Netflix: Anticipations for 2025 and Beyond

As 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to take a look at Netflix’s new animated series. Below, we discuss all the new and returning anime series expected for 2025 and beyond.

Release dates are subject to change, and some of these series could premiere as late as 2024. With the exception of a few titles, we will not include anime series in this list – we track them separately here.

Assassin ‘s Creed
One of Adi Shankar’s two new series on this list (the other is also a video game adaptation) is based on the popular Ubisoft franchise Assassin ‘s Creed. We have already seen Shankar explore this universe Assassinenfrosch in Captain Laserhawkbut this series will be a faithful adaptation of the game universe.

Asterix and Obelix: The Great Battle
Confirmed for 2025 and recently presented at the Annecy Animated Film Festival, this new series is based on the famous French franchise that has been seen in numerous formats. The official synopsis states: “When the village druid forgets the recipe for the magic potion, Asterix, Obelix and the Gauls must find new ways to fend off the Roman invaders.”

Devil May Cry
Another Adi Shankar title in this list, this adaptation of the legendary video game Devil May CryReleased in 2001, the game promises to be faithful to the original game. The Mir studio is responsible for the animation of this series, which is scheduled to be released soon.

Ghostbusters
Sony Pictures Animation offers a new animated series Ghostbustersa franchise that has already been explored in several animated formats in addition to the main films. Everything seems to be on track for the series, announced for 2022, to be broadcast in the coming years.

Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld
Confirmed for winter 2024, this teen fantasy series is about a young Texas girl with superpowers that she tries to suppress. When a demon king tries to steal her powers, she learns to embrace them. Ali Wong, Lucy Liu and Jimmy O. Yang are part of the voice cast.

To make it short is a new animated comedy by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of BoJack Horseman. This time he deals with family stories and past hurts. This series is aimed at those who were parents, children, brothers or sisters.

The Universe dusk is back with a new animated series based on it Midnight Sunwhich tells the original story from Edward Cullen’s perspective.

Minecraft
The successful video game Minecraft is the subject of two major adaptations: a live-action film starring Jack Black and a new animated series produced by Netflix and the team behind Sonic-Prime.

Motel Transylvania
Hotel Transilvanien transforms into Motel Transylvania in this new series from Sony Pictures Animation. Drac and Mavis embark on an adventure to open a new resort in the California desert, a series planned for 2025.

Splinter Cell
Based on the novels by Tom Clancy, Splinter CellThe animated series is produced by the French studio FOST. Two seasons are already planned, with Derek Kolstad (John Wick) at the forefront of this project.

Stranger Things: The Animated Series (+ Stranger Things: Tokyo)

The Undervale
This new series is about a mother of two who inherits a haunted hotel full of ghosts, including her estranged brother. Created by Matt Roller, this series seems to follow the style of Dead End: Paranormal Park.

Wolfskönig
Based on the novels by Curtis Jobling, this new family series is produced by Jellyfish Pictures and focuses on the adventures of werewolves in the world of Swirl.

Some anime series were announced but disappeared during development or production. In these cases, it is uncertain whether they will see the light of day or not. We will cover some of these in detail, but also include other MIAs Far Cry et Himmelswald.

Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas

Zack Snyder started working on the zombie franchise Army of the Dead from its debut on Netflix with a release in May 2021. A prequel followed a year later. The universe would then expand with a full sequel, Planet of the Deadand Vegas losta new animated series.

The production of Vegas lost started off well, but we haven’t received any updates in recent years. Based on our research, it appears that all production was halted in late 2021 or early 2022. Although Snyder said in a late 2023 interview that the project wasn’t completely dead, there are few signs that it will be picked up again. New reports confirm this trend and suggest that Netflix has given up on the franchise.

Magic: The Gathering

This plunged us into an in-depth investigation. The release was originally planned for late 2022. Magic: The Gathering was supposed to be a major animated series based on the famous card game. However, probably due to major changes in creative direction and other factors, the series never saw the light of day and most of the references were removed. We learned that a new writer joined the project in early 2024, so it could be that the series shows signs of life, albeit in a new form.

To finish off our list, let’s take a look at some of Netflix’s returning original animated series (both for adults and kids). It should be noted that we often don’t get renewal confirmations for some series far in advance, so this list is likely much longer.

Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix Re – Although Netflix hinted earlier this year that the series would return for a second season, the video suggesting this was ultimately removed and we haven’t heard anything (aside from some behind-the-scenes extras over the summer).

Big Mouth (Staffel 8) – Netflix’s longest-running adult animated series has been confirmed to have its final season, ending in 2025.

Blue Eye Samurai (Staffel 2) – A return for a second season is expected in 2026. This multiple Emmy Award-winning action series is one of Netflix’s most acclaimed series.

Blood of Zeus (Season 3) – Confirmed to release in 2025. This season will be the last, although the creators had plans for two more seasons.

Castlevania: Nocturne (Season 2) – This series is presented under Geek Week 2024meaning a release could be imminent.

Love, Death & Robots (Volume 4) – With stories from animation studios around the world, we can expect another volume soon.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (Season 2) – Season 1 is scheduled to release in October 2024, but according to our information, the series has received an order for at least two seasons.
