The Sant Egidio community, which leads the social welfare activities of the Catholic Church, started the Three Tents project in the Pournara refugee camp in Cyprus to provide protection and find meaning to human life by incorporating the three important things of “food, education and prayer”.
Due to wars and other threats, most of the people who leave their homes and countries and come as refugees are addicted to depression and other intense mental disorders, the society has started the three tent project by incorporating the three elements of “food, education and prayer” that are conducive to comprehensive human health.
The refugee camps in Cyprus are even jokingly referred to as resorts by the media, with state-of-the-art facilities such as children’s clubs, restaurants, swimming pools and free English courses.
These shelters help people to find a dignified personal life in the tents of friendship. Young people who have arrived as refugees from places like Cameroon, Congo, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc., later join Sant Egidio workers and help in volunteer work.
There are over 1,000 juvenile cages in the refugee centers in Cyprus, along with outings and games run by volunteers to help reduce stress levels.
The success of the tabernacle project is also judged by the fact that everyone is present and participates enthusiastically in the moments of prayer.
