“The three main reasons why Salvadorans leave the country are mainly for economic reasons, for reasons of gender violence or political persecution and family branching.” 2024-07-04 06:36:10

In the Encuentro interview with Julio Villagrán, researcher and consultant Celia Medrano explained that there is an increase in new refugees of Salvadoran origin all over the world. In 2023 alone, there were 133,000 asylum seekers in different countries, while until July of that same year, there were 62,248 refugees from El Salvador registered in the world.

“Data up to December 2023 show that there are 33,831 refugees of Salvadoran origin in the United States and there are 115,483 asylum applications… The majority of asylum applications and refugees of Salvadoran origin are in the United States.” Medrano said.

The researcher also provided data on the number of refugees and asylum seekers of Salvadoran origin, highlighting the countries where the most Salvadorans in this situation have been registered, being the United States, Mexico, Italy, Spain and Belize, where there are more refugees of Salvadoran nationality.

“With the data for 2023, in Italy there are around 4,197 refugees of Salvadoran origin and 1,418 Salvadoran asylum seekers registered… In the case of Spain in 2023 there are 3,205 cases of asylum seekers registered and Belize 1,131… In Mexico there are 18,996 Salvadorans with refugee status and 11,548 asylum seekers” the researcher reported.

Medrano explained that migration continues to occur in El Salvador, and highlighted three main causes that have caused the population to leave the country, seeking asylum or refuge in other countries.

“The three main reasons why Salvadorans leave the country are mainly for economic reasons, for reasons of gender violence or political persecution and family branching.” said Celia Medrano.
