The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided this March 19 at a meeting of its Executive Board in Switzerland to provisionally lift the suspension of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG) until further notice.

“This has the consequence that Guatemalan athletes who have qualified (and those who join) the Paris Olympics will be able to compete once more.”under its flag and anthem at the Olympic Games and other international multi-sport events, normally“, the IOC reported in a statement.

Guatemala had been suspended since December 2022 following a modification to the COG statutes by the Constitutional Court (CC), said action was interpreted by the IOC as government intervention.

However, this March 19, the IOC considered that in recent weeks there has been a “positive evolution” and named in a statement published on its official website three reasons why the decision was made to provisionally lift the suspension.

The keys that led the IOC to provisionally lift the suspension

This decision by the International Olympic Committee means that the Guatemalan Olympic Committee is once once more recognized by the IOC and can once once more operate under the Olympic Charter.

According to the IOC, all Guatemalan athletes can prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with the possibility of being registered as representatives of Guatemala.

However, the International Committee was clear in warning that reserves the right to take any further action, including reinstating the suspension if there is any “new improper interference with the governance of the National Committee”.

The IOC will continue to monitor the situation closely, including “the planned modifications to sports legislation to ensure that the NOC of Guatemala can freely carry out its elections, in accordance with the NOC statutes approved by the IOC and the Olympic Charter“.

In December 2024 the situation with respect to Guatemala and the Guatemalan Olympic Committee will be reassessed.
