Beijing – AFP
China’s top legislator Li Zhanshu will visit Russia next week, state media reported Sunday, in the first such visit by a Communist Party political official to the country since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine.
Beijing and Moscow have strengthened relations in recent years and intensified cooperation within the framework of what they call a “borderless” relationship to serve as a counterweight to the global hegemony of the United States.
Meanwhile, tension between China and the West escalated, following Beijing refused to condemn Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and provided diplomatic cover for its breach of Western sanctions and arms sales to Kyiv.
According to Xinhua, Li, who is the third official in the hierarchy of Chinese power, will visit Russia, Mongolia, Nepal and South Korea from Wednesday to Sept. 17.
He will attend the Eastern Economic Forum, which is scheduled to be held over four days, starting Monday in Russia’s far eastern city of Vladivostok, according to Xinhua.
