The next conference of the Crossroads of Sciences and Arts will focus on the theme of the scientific approach through the example of the theory of plate tectonics.
How are mountain ranges formed? The oceans that surround us? What is the origin of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions? All these questions have tormented researchers for centuries without finding a truly convincing and satisfactory explanation. It was therefore necessary to wait until the middle of the 20th century and the joint efforts of different scientific communities for the theory of plate tectonics to emerge. Even today, many mysteries remain, and current work by scientists is constantly seeking to push the boundaries of the theory of plate tectonics.
A geophysicist as guest
The guest: Maëlis Arnould is a geophysicist at the Lyon Geology Laboratory (LGL-TPE), specialist in the interactions between plate tectonics and mantle convection. After completing her thesis jointly between the ENS de Lyon in France and the University of Sydney in Australia, she completed two postdoctoral fellowships, one at the ENS de Paris and the second in Norway at the University of Oslo, before returning to France, where she is now a lecturer. His research involves creating digital models of virtual planets on a global scale in order to better understand how the Earth’s mantle influences the evolution of the surface of our planet.
The Calligramme bookstore in Cahors will be present to sell the book “How scientists know” published by CNRS Éditions.
Tuesday March 19 at 8:30 p.m. Clément Marot conference space. Free. After the conference: dessert buffet. Bring a cake to share, we’ll take care of the drinks. Information: 05 65 22 28 14.
