‘The text is my political party’: How German music is becoming political again

They come from Bad Sulzflen, the Black Forest or some towns on the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Even following the fall of the Berlin Wall, some people moved from shabby Berlin to the Hanseatic cities. In the late 1980s, Hamburg was considered the “treasure city” praised by the Lacey singers, where there were not only “boats and fish sleeping in the harbor”. For young musicians now approaching 60, Hamburg is also a place worth visiting, and not just to form a band. It was also regarding reinjecting critical or relevant, lifelike content into the German language following the end of the German New Wave, given the arbitrary nature of popular music.
