They had 15-game winner Taijuan Walker and Cristopher Sánchez each pitch two innings of a simulated game on Sunday, so they remain in contention to start Game 4.
With two series short, none of the starters have seen activity this postseason.
Thomson said the decision might come down to how much the Phillies will have to use their bullpen over the first three games. Sanchez has extensive experience as a reliever, while Walker, in the first season of a four-year, $72 million contract, has made 194 career starts.
The Diamondbacks, who won all five postseason games to reach the National League Championship Series, also remain largely unchanged. They added right-hander Slade Cecconi to the NLCS roster and left out infielder Jace Peterson. The move leaves Arizona with 13 pitchers.
