The Terminator director shares his perspective on the rise of AI, which he believes is the greatest current threat to human space.

James Cameron, whose Terminator franchise already evoked the dangers of artificial intelligence in the 1980s, estimated in a new interview that the weaponization of this technology represents the greatest current threat once morest the human species.

“The weaponization of AI is the biggest threat,” he told the channel. CTV News. “I think we’re going to replicate with AI what we did in the nuclear arms race. [pendant la guerre froide, NDLR]. If we don’t work on it, others will do it for us and it will escalate.”

“An AI will be able to fight other computers, but at such speed that humans will never be able to intervene,” he adds. “There will be no way to defuse this situation. When you are faced with a potential nuclear arms race, being able to defuse is essential, but AI will never do it.”

“I warned you in 1984 [la date de sortie de Terminator, NDLR]but no one listened to me!”, laughs the director, who is currently writing a new part of the famous franchise. In Terminator, an artificial intelligence decides to emancipate itself from its creators and destroy humanity.

Pandora’s box

Since the launch of the Hollywood actors’ strike, the dangers of AI have been at the center of debate in Hollywood. Christopher Nolan, who has just released Oppenheimer, a biopic on the father of the atomic bomb, also draws a parallel between this page of American history and the importance taken by AI in recent months.

“Do we really have to open this Pandora’s box, knowing the unintended consequences that this might entail?” Asks the director in the columns of the Point. “So I think the subject of the film is more relevant than ever. Oppenheimer speaks to us regarding our present in many aspects.”

“If technological innovation is not controlled by politicians who understand its stakes, it becomes problematic. We are in the middle of this debate with artificial intelligence”, concludes the director.
