The situation is tense between Germany and Belgium. At least legally. Indeed, an astonishing case is currently shaking the prison world of our country. Belgium seeks to recover Adnan, suspected of assassination following a chase in June, near Liège. The latter was arrested in Germany when he went to our country to explain himself.
Problem: currently extraditing him is not an option. Germany opposes it. “Germany refuses to hand him over to the Belgian authorities, because it considers that the sanitary conditions in the prisons in Belgium are not guaranteed”, confirms Renaud Molders-Pierre, Adnan’s lawyer. Our neighbor fears that his conditions of detention are not dignified, denouncing the dilapidation of the buildings, the lack of staff, the prison overcrowding and the lack of staff.
In Belgium, 11,569 people are in prison, in 38 different places. The occupancy rate is 111%, with 1000 places missing. Something to shake Germany. “It’s more than shame. We are the laughing stock of Europe, we are the laughingstock of our economic partners because they believe that we are not capable of respecting human rights in Belgian prisons”gets angry Renaud Molders-Pierre.
This is not the first time that Belgium has been singled out for its prisons. Italy and the Netherlands had already expressed similar doubts. This can create an imbalance in our prisons, since those who are subject to extradition often have guarantees regarding their conditions of detention, which are not the same as those arrested in Belgium.
The case is following its course. A letter will be sent with the guarantees. New detention houses will open in the coming months to fill, at least in part, the current lack of space.
