The teachers have decided to soften the strike, but promise to return with a bigger wave in November

LŠDPS chairman Andrius Navickas will propose to move to a calmer phase of the strike until November 22, during which it would be recommended that the striking teachers return to the classrooms, because if the education process does not take place for several months, the students would suffer a lot.

However, LŠDPS will still discuss this. If the teachers say that they need to continue the strike, according to the union leader, this will will be carried out.

If it is decided to suppress the strike, it will not be stopped anyway.

“The strike will not be stopped, simply because we see that both emotionally and physically teachers are tired, and new ones do not have time to join, we will suppress that wave somewhat. We will take a certain break – we plan.

Of course, those who want to stay on strike, they can. Because the strike is legally unstoppable. And then – around November 22 – we plan to mobilize and expand the strike to an even greater scale,” A. Navickas told reporters in Vilnius on Thursday.

LŠDPS now demands that teachers’ salaries be increased by 15 percent from January, and by the same amount from September.

“This is really the last frontier. We already said that in Rieše. We compromised twice. And in this place, we certainly do not promise to descend any more.

Any smaller increase, we believe, would not make a difference. That’s why we don’t intend to retreat”, emphasized A. Navickas.

While explaining to the Minister of Education, Science and Sports Gintautas Jakštas that there is no more money to increase teachers’ salaries, the chairman of LŠDPS said that the minister is not the state.

According to him, the state is primarily a society that thinks differently. “And that’s why the decision in the Seimas must be different”, believes A. Navickas.

He was seconded by Lilija Bručkienė, who traveled from Klaipėda to Vilnius for 14 days on foot.

According to her, during the trip she discussed with her colleagues that some special circumstances are needed for the situation to change.

“As much as we work in working groups, as much as we invest time and energy in changes, and those changes do not happen. So, it takes something incredibly disruptive to society for that change to begin.

I am very hopeful and hopeful that this march of teachers, parents, children, Lithuanian society as a whole should be the drastic step that would force politicians to identify problems and start solving them”, said the Lithuanian language teacher who reached the capital from the port city on foot.
