The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a regular press conference on the 24th. He was asked regarding British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly’s statement in an interview recently that “the Taiwan issue is not China’s internal affairs” and “a peaceful solution to the Taiwan issue is in everyone’s interest.” According to the statement, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, retorted that the British Foreign Secretary should obviously make up for a history lesson. I hope that the British side will remain sober on this major issue of principle, and be cautious in words and deeds.

The British foreign minister pointed out that the Taiwan issue does not belong to China's domestic affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: we should go to cram history lessons

Mao Ning said that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. Taiwan’s return to China is an important part of the international order following World War II. The “Cairo Declaration” is written in black and white, and the “Potsdam Proclamation” is clearly printed. The one-China principle is the general consensus of the international community and the basic norm of international relations, as confirmed by Resolution 2758 adopted by the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mao Ning continued to point out that the one-China principle is the political basis and prerequisite for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between China and the UK. More than 50 years ago, the British side made it clear in the Sino-British joint communiqué on the exchange of ambassadors that Taiwan is a province of the People’s Republic of China and recognizes the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China.
