The Taikomama Association: Discover the Powerful Art of Taiko Drums in the South of France

Learning the piano since the age of four, practicing karate for eight years and studying Japanese to become a translator, a language that she thought she had chosen “by chance” at university… In hindsight, Marilina Karpan says that everything led her to what is today her main passion: the taiko, a Japanese drum.

Only association in the South

She discovered it by chance during a concert in Rome: “It blew me away. They say it’s a drum whose sound reminds us of our mother’s heartbeat when we were in her womb. So it’s an intense, almost ancestral experience. And then, there are the gestures. The choreography is somewhere between martial arts and dance.”

While it arouses enthusiasm in many European countries, taiko is still little known in France. Partner of the Lyre de Montferrier, the Taikomama association, which means “the drum as it is”, is the only one in the entire south of France. Marilina’s ambition is to form a group to put on shows and make this Japanese art known. It welcomes people whatever their level, on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bugadières room. Internships are also offered. The first will take place on Sunday October 15. Membership in the association entitles you to two trial lessons and a 50% discount on an internship.

On Monday evening, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in this same room, Marilina offers a body percussion class, which allows you to work on coordination and relax. Its benefits are numerous. “With each movement we learn, we create new synapses between neurons and we build a brain that is more efficient in terms of analysis, memory but also moral strength… it’s a fairly complete self-reconstruction . And on top of that, we have fun!”
