The Tachikawa mayoral election started at 7:00 am on the 3rd at 26 locations in the city. Voter turnout was 11.18 percent as of noon, up 0.39 points from the previous election, according to the city’s election commission.

The number of eligible voters on that day was 152,938. Voting closes at 8:00 pm and votes are counted at 9:00 pm at Shibasaki Gymnasium.

All of the candidates are independent newcomers, former city councilor Daisuke Ito (48) = Tokyo Citizens First Association, recommended by the People’s Democratic Party, former Tokyo Metropolitan Assemblyman Daishi Sakai (55), and former Tokyo Metropolitan Assemblyman Koji Shimizu (57) = Liberal Democratic Party. Aiming for a new leadership role, each candidate engaged in a verbal battle with pledges such as the enhancement of child-rearing and the promotion of community development.

Voter turnout for the mayoral race has been low recently. The voter turnout of the last election (2015) was 29.2%, the lowest ever. Although it exceeded that last time (2019), it was 34.74%.
