The Nintendo Switch sold 125 million copies, surpassing the Wii, the original PlayStation and the PS4, and thus positioning itself as the second best-selling home console of all time. Despite speculation regarding a possible Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has confirmed that no new consoles will launch until 2024. And for those hoping for a price drop, they’re going to have to wait. Despite a drop in sales, Nintendo has no price reduction plans at this time.

Since its launch, the Nintendo Switch has found its place in our hearts, but also in our living rooms, our bedrooms, our backpacks… and even our toilets. The Switch pulled off a feat worthy of Mario jumping over a giant mushroom: it became the most popular home console in Nintendo’s long history, and that was no small feat.

As of March 31, 2023, Nintendo has sold over 125 million copies of the Switch. To give you an idea, it’s as if every inhabitant of France, Belgium and Switzerland had one. And this stellar performance helped the Switch rise above the Wii, the original PlayStation, and even the PS4. It is now the second best-selling home console of all time, just behind the PS2 and its 155 million units.

No Switch 2, for the moment, nor a price drop

But then, what regarding a Nintendo Switch 2? Why would you want to change a winning team? The Switch is still selling very well and Nintendo doesn’t seem to want to give it up for a newcomer. As the saying goes : ” You don’t change a winning console ! “. Nintendo has announced that no new console will be launched before 2024. In the meantime, the Japanese firm is banking on upcoming games to continue to attract players. Like, for example, Zelda Tears of The Kingdom.

And for those who were hoping for a price drop, you will have to come back. Even following seven years, Nintendo has no intention of reducing the price of its console. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa was clear on this point. Despite a drop in sales, no price reduction plan is planned for the moment. The reason ? The unfavorable Japanese yen exchange rate and inflation pushing up costs. So, if you were waiting for a price drop to offer you the Switch, you will have to be patient… or break the bank.
