The Swedish Regulatory Agency asks customers to report weight errors in the grocery store

In a VG case a Joker store in Bærum was revealed with a scale that was not in order. A customer responded that two limes were entered at 288 grams at the checkout, but when he got home and weighed them, they were only 139 grams.

– We are tightening our routines and will take more random samples in the future. Customers who discover errors on our scales are encouraged to contact the store directly, so the store can check the scale, says Anna Kappler, communications advisor at the Norwegian Merchants’ House, to the newspaper.

She says that all the scales they have in their stores have to be approved by the Swedish Regulatory Agency and that they pay for an annual weight check.

The Norwegian Regulatory Agency writes on its pages that there are over 21,000 scales in the grocery trade that are subject to supervision. They state that they check and supervise, but say it is not their responsibility to check that the scales are correctly calibrated at all times.

– It is the shops’ own responsibility to ensure that the scales weigh correctly. They can follow this up with a separate system where they regularly check their weights, the Norwegian Regulatory Agency writes on theirs websites.

They encourage customers who experience errors to contact the store directly or submit a tip to the Norwegian Correctional Service.
