The Surface of Bruckner: A Symphony of Artificial Intelligence and Music

The big concert night, which the Bruckner Orchestra traditionally takes part in as part of the Ars Electronica Festival, took place on Friday in the Gleishalle of Linz’s PostCity under the motto “Prelude”. Prelude to dance, prelude to moving images that do not owe their imagination to the human mind, but rather grow from artificial intelligence. “The Surface of Bruckner” is a co-creation between man (Cori O’Lan) and machine, between chance and plan, between perfect flow and the randomness of the end bordering on the inadequate. Female figures in outfits reminiscent of dirndl dresses hopped around, the head of an imaginary Bruckner floated past an imaginary landscape, miracle machines turned and new instrument creations danced across the screen.

The Bruckner Orchestra under Markus Poschner intoned Bruckner’s “Dance Music”: The Scherzi from Symphonies 0, 2, 4, 6 and 7, in which the Ländler can be found, whom the Ansfeldner met as a boy and made an element of his own language. A language that Bruckner inhaled, but he didn’t try to imitate it like artificial intelligence, but rather created something new. This is where the limits of artificial intelligence become apparent, because what was experienced was reminiscent of something that had already been experienced. The interludes are fascinating: on the one hand, a recording of György Ligeti’s “Articulation” with the famous audio score by the graphic artist Rainer Wehinger, and on the other hand, various live contributions. Violinist Florian Sighartner led the first scherzo with an inspiring mix of jazz, folklore and Bruckner, the rapper Def Ill surprised with a staccato flow medley and the Icelandic composer and double bassist Bára Gísladóttir fascinated with two finely woven works. Pre-recorded and live sounds created an aura mix of infinite space. Technology-savvy visitors seemed to be more impressed by the fact that twelve first violinists started playing at the same time and that the wind instruments began at the same moment. A good symphony orchestra like the Bruckner Orchestra is better synchronized than artificial intelligence is ever capable of. (wruss)

Conclusion: Bruckner’s notes, intoned live, surpassed what was only partially intelligently artificial.
