The Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas responded to the request made by the Supreme Court of Brazil and asked Interpol to arrest 61 militants of Jair Bolsonaro who participated in the uprising against the Brazilian Government in early 2023. The 61 involved are convicted or are being prosecuted for «coup attempt» y «destruction of public propertyamong other similar crimes.

On January 8, 2023, the 61 Bolsonaro militants wanted by the Argentine justice system and Interopol participated along with others in an uprising after the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the Brazilian elections, defeating the then president, Jair Bolsonaro. Those involved reported a tax fraud and the disrespect began in Brasilia, encouraged by the statements of Bolsonaro, who did not accept the result of the polls and called on the armed forces to rise up against the Constitution and prevent the inauguration of the new president.

However, the riots in Planalto, the headquarters of the Executive Branch located in Brasilia, and in other nearby offices were contained and those involved crossed the border with Argentina and managed to take refuge. Almost two years after the event, the Supreme Court of Brazil asked Argentina the extradition of the fugitives, for which he sent their files to the Foreign Ministry. After receiving the documents, Judge Rafecas requested the arrests.

Of the group that takes refuge in Argentina, two have already been arrested in La Plata and are waiting for Justice to continue with the operation. They are accused of «attempted coup d’état«, in addition to other related crimes, such as «criminal association» y «destruction of public property«.

The relationship between Milei and Brazil

The investigation could complicate the relationship between Javier Milei and Brazilian leaders, both Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro. On the one hand, Milei and Lula will have their first meeting during the G20 summit organized by the Brazilian next week. If the Argentine Justice responds to the request of the Brazilian Court, Milei’s relationship with Bolsonaro could be compromised, both being the most prominent leaders of the South American right today.

What are ⁢the main factors that led to the January 8 coup attempt⁢ by‍ Bolsonaro’s ⁣supporters in Brazil?

**Interview with Professor Ana Lima, Expert in Latin American ‍Political Movements**

**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Professor Lima. We want‌ to discuss‍ the recent actions taken by⁤ Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas in response to the Supreme Court of Brazil’s request regarding the 61 militants linked to Jair ⁣Bolsonaro. Can⁣ you provide some context on what led to this ‍situation?

**Professor Lima:** Thank you for having me. This escalation stems from the⁣ events of January 8,⁤ 2023, when radical supporters of Jair Bolsonaro attempted a‌ coup following the election of Luiz⁢ Inácio Lula da Silva. Many of these militants engaged in ‌violent‌ protests, leading to significant destruction of government property in ‌Brasília. Their actions were seen as a direct challenge to⁣ the democratic process in Brazil.

**Editor:**‌ What specific charges are the 61 individuals facing, and what implications does this extradition effort have for Brazilian-Argentine relations?

**Professor Lima:** They are primarily facing charges related to the coup⁣ attempt, destruction of public property, and incitement of‌ violence. The ⁤extradition request could strain relations‌ between Brazil and Argentina, especially since these individuals attempted to escape‌ justice by fleeing across the⁣ border. It will test how both nations handle political dissent and accountability.

**Editor:** There has been much discussion regarding Jair Bolsonaro’s influence‍ on these militants. To what extent do you think his post-election rhetoric incited these protests?

**Professor Lima:** Bolsonaro’s rhetoric was a significant ⁤factor. After losing the election, he refused to accept⁣ the ‍results and openly called for military intervention. This kind of language‌ undoubtedly emboldened‌ his supporters, many of whom believed that‌ violent resistance was ⁣justified. It’s critical ‌to analyze how political leaders can shape their followers’ actions and ‍perceptions ‌of legitimacy.

**Editor:** Looking⁣ ahead, what could the repercussions be if‍ these fugitives are extradited ⁣and tried in Brazil?

**Professor Lima:** If ⁣extradited, it could set‍ a strong⁣ precedent for‍ holding ‍individuals accountable for politically motivated violence. It ⁤might also ‌deter future uprisings and ‌reinforce the importance of democratic ‌norms.⁢ However, it could simultaneously provoke backlash from Bolsonaro’s supporters,⁢ leading to⁢ further‌ polarization within Brazil.

**Editor:** Thank you, Professor⁣ Lima,⁣ for your insights on ‌this complex and evolving situation.

**Professor Lima:** My pleasure. It’s crucial to keep following these developments as ⁤they unfold.
