Blood circulation can sometimes cause some type of pain due to obstruction in the vessels, arteries or veins and this can trigger inflamed parts of the body such as the legs, for example.
Elevated cholesterol or poor blood circulation can cause various heart conditions. For example, when a person suffers from high blood pressure, they are more prone to coronary artery disease, enlarged left ventricle or heart failure, says the research institute Mayo Clinic.
For this reason, it is vital to consume foods that contribute to cleaning the blood vessels such as green tea, onion, beetroot, lemon or turmeric, but it is also vital to avoid some things such as refined flour (present in bakery pastries, etc.), alcohol or coffee, according to the Túa Saúde portal.
However, there is a food that helps with circulation, due to its high content of antioxidants and incidentally, it also contributes to maintaining correct and healthy cholesterol levels. It’s regarding dark chocolate.
According to cardiologist and director of the Center for Restorative Medicine in Palms Springs, Steven Gundry, “dark chocolate helps your body produce nitric oxide, which has an important role in protecting your heart and veins. In moderation, dark chocolate is a fantastic addition to your diet.”
According to the National Library of Medicine, High blood pressure “is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, contributing to approximately 50% of cardiovascular events worldwide and 37% of CVD-related deaths in Western populations.”
They also reveal that several epidemiological studies carried out before “suggest that cocoa-rich products reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The flavanols found in cocoa have been shown to increase endothelial nitric oxide formation which promotes vasodilation and therefore lowering of blood pressure.”
Thus, the study, titled Effect of cocoa on blood pressure, provided “moderate-quality evidence that flavonoid-rich chocolate and cocoa products have a small (2 mmHg) short-term blood pressure-lowering effect.” mainly in healthy adults.
Meanwhile, a systematic review called Assessment of the Quality of Evidence for the Association of Food and Nutrients with Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes and published in the magazine Jama Network Open analyzed various foods and found that chocolate was not related to increased disease or obstruction of blood circulation.
For his part, as quoted The New York PostJoann Manson, director of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, states that “these studies can only identify correlations between eating chocolate and health; They can’t prove that chocolate is beneficial: people who eat more chocolate might be different in other ways that affect their health.”
