Since the launch of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in 2019, it has been possible to subscribe at a very reduced price to Microsoft’s premium subscription. Indeed, the brand had a very generous policy towards its Xbox Live Gold subscribers. If you had up to 36 months of prepaid Xbox Live Gold on your account and subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Microsoft applied a 1:1 conversion rate. In other words, you left with 36 months of subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, for the price of 36 months of Xbox Live Gold subscription, a subscription sold at half the price.

After four years when Microsoft allowed this very interesting conversion, the manufacturer is tightening the noose.

The era of higher prices

Now, subscribing to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from an Xbox Live Gold subscription will cause a much less generous conversion that will follow the price difference between the two services. In other words, 3 months of Xbox Live Gold subscription will give 2 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. The information was revealed by Tom Warren, journalist for The Verge. We have requested confirmation from Xbox France who did not respond at the time of publication of this article.

This change in Microsoft policy also follows the increase in the price of the subscription. Since this Thursday, July 6, 2023, the Xbox Game Pass for console is billed at 10.99 euros per month (compared to 9.99 euros per month previously). Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has gone from 12.99 euros per month to 14.99 euros per month. Microsoft is giving subscribers to the service a month off with a price change effective from August 13 for renewals.

It is clear that Microsoft has moved into a new phase of Xbox Game Pass where the firm will seek less to acquire new subscribers and more to increase the profitability of its service for current subscribers. This is a classic step for subscription content services, which Netflix has also gone through.

While waiting for the highly anticipated launch of Starfield for the beginning of September, the bad news keeps coming for the brand’s customers who have to match a drop in the quantity and quality of new games in the catalog, a void which Redfall mightn’t quite fill, with a price hike. And this, while Sony is still in a growth phase with its PlayStation Plus Extra whose catalog is growing month following month.

We imagine that Microsoft prefers to chain bad news now to get off to a more positive start with the launch of Starfield, a new Xbox Series S, and perhaps the takeover of Activision Blizzard.
