The Sunday opening of shops, approved by the people of Ticino last June, is regarding to become a reality. Migros has decided to open two of its branches every Sunday for a month in reputed tourist regions, as now specified by law.

This first trial balloon from the orange giant has been launched in its Maggia and Melano supermarkets since July 23 and for a period of four weeks.

The objective of this test phase is to analyze customer reactions before moving on to the stage of permanent Sunday openings.

Waiting Co-op

If Migros has taken the plunge, the Coop indicates that evaluations are in progress. As for the Aldi and Lidl discounters, these openings on Sundays are not planned because of the maximum commercial surface imposed by law on stores, which must be less than 400 m2.

The unions, which had fought the law at the time, promise to keep watch. Asked by the RSI, they assure that they will report all abuses to the cantonal labor inspector.
