If you listen to people in East Tyrol these days, it is not uncommon to hear complaints about poor health. People feel like they have the flu or complain of gastrointestinal problems. For East Tyrolean virologist Gernot Walder, these are typical symptoms of summer flu, as it is popularly known. “Enteroviruses have been dominant in the district for a long time now,” says the doctor. These can spread in the gastrointestinal tract as well as in the respiratory tract. Walder can also report on streptococcal infections.
