The Vice-President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo (Hamedti), affirmed the strict commitment to reaching a final political settlement as soon as possible to end the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Hamidti said, “The launch of the final phase of the political process confirms our previous and renewed commitment to end the status quo by signing a final agreement under which full civil authority will be formed.”
Arab and international powers welcome the political process
The member countries of the Quartet and the Troika on Sudan welcomed the launch of the second and final phase of the political process to restore democratic transition in the country, on Sunday.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Norway, Britain and the United States said in a statement published by the US embassy in Khartoum that the process of restoring democratic transition “is the basis for establishing a new government with civilian leadership that will lead Sudan during a transitional period that will culminate in elections.”
The statement called on all Sudanese parties to “engage in good faith in these dialogues and focus efforts to complete the negotiations and reach an agreement as soon as possible,” stressing that it is necessary to address the urgent political, economic, security and humanitarian challenges in the country.
The statement also stressed that the launch of the second phase of the dialogue is “essential to open the resumption of international aid and investment and deepen cooperation between the Government of Sudan and international partners.”
The tripartite mechanism, consisting of the United Nations, the African Union and IGAD, announced the launch of the final phase of the political process in Sudan, on Sunday.
According to the mechanism, “the signatories of the framework agreement, both military and civilians, will launch the final stage of the political process that aims to reach a final and just agreement, in the presence of representatives of civil society, human rights groups, women and religious leaders, according to local Sudanese media.”
Among the issues that will be discussed are the evaluation of the peace agreement, transitional justice, reform of the security and defense sector, and a solution to the crisis in eastern Sudan.
The leaders of the Sudanese army and civilian political forces led by the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change, under the auspices of the tripartite mechanism, signed on December 5. framework agreement to start a transitional period It lasts two years, ending with the transfer of power to civilians.
