About 300 km from Lahore, the village of 101 RL, a suburb of the city of Mian Chinnu in southern Punjab, is very backward and like many other villages in Punjab, basic facilities are not available here.

Home to around 1500 families, this small village is 32 km away from Mian Chanu city.

There are neither proper education facilities nor any proper arrangement regarding health. A dirty drain was seen flowing in a dirt road in the village, which does not have a proper sewage system. In front of it was a rough-hewn house, outside of which two or three banners were placed, on which the words of congratulation on Arshad Nadeem’s success were written.

A few journalists were also seen outside the house, most of them local and some had come there from Multan or Lahore for coverage.

The gate of the house was open. There were several people inside, including women, while the men appeared to be sitting under the fans in the sitting room. On one side, there was a crude kitchen where a few women could be seen cooking tea and food for the relatives and the people of the neighborhood who had come to congratulate them. Generally, such an atmosphere is seen on the occasion of marriages in poor families in villages.

A tent was pitched and a few chairs were set up below, where a local artist was playing drums and village children were playing bhangra to his beat in the dirt yard.

On inquiry, it was found that Arshad Nadeem’s brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, friends and relatives are gathered around his mother Razia Parveen. The series of tea and sweet also continued.

Arshad Nadeem’s mother said that since seeing Arshad succeed in the Olympics competition, after that no one slept but everyone woke up happily.

On one side, gym equipment was seen in the yard, while on the other, there were beds. The TV was specially arranged to watch the javelin throw competition.

Razia Parveen said that she has seven children, out of which five are sons and two are daughters. Arshad is third among them. He is married and has three children. A daughter and two sons. He has made the country and our name bright, there is no other example.’

Referring to Arshad Nadeem’s difficulties, the mother said that ‘Arshad also endured all the difficulties that a laborer’s son has to face. His father has taught him by working hard. Arshad was fond of cricket, football, shell and javelin since seventh standard. When he won the first position in school competitions in javelin in matriculation, his father asked him to continue the sport.

‘Arshad continued to practice javelin under your help and also got education up to matriculation. Then suddenly he started winning big competitions. After many years he has won medals before and now he has made us proud by winning this gold medal.’

A close friend of Arshad Nadeem was also present here, whose name is Kaleemullah.

He said that both of them are childhood friends. Arshad won javelin competitions first at the school level and then at the district level. Then when the Punjab government organized a sports festival during the reign of Shahbaz Sharif, we went to Lahore with Arshad for javelin competitions. When Arshad threw the longest javelin throw there, Punjab Sports Board officials offered him training to improve his game, which Arshad accepted. After that, he continued to achieve continuous success and increased his efforts, the result of which came out today in the form of a gold medal.

According to Kaleemullah: ‘Arshad is an open-hearted, straightforward person. We are friends since childhood. He is an example of humility and humility. He always used to say that one day I will surprise the world by making the longest throw not only in Pakistan but in the whole world. We thought that there is no competition for Arshad at the local level, but there are many big players in the world, how can this be possible? But they did it. Won medals before and today surprised the world.’

Even in the city of Mian Chanun, after 40 years of Arshad Nadeem, the gold medal for the country was heard. The citizens declared Arshad Nadeem as a national hero and expressed their pride.

He demanded that many more Arshad Nadeems can be born if opportunities and facilities are provided in small towns to make hardworking youth like Arshad the hero of the country.

We have also seen Arshad Nadeem practicing at the Punjab Stadium. Other youngsters were also practicing in the stadium and Arshad was also seen working hard with his coach.

A world-class javelin was also provided to him a few months ago on suspicion. He had earlier told Independent Urdu that there are no world-class training opportunities here, nor are they being given any attention like athletes from other countries. However, he had made a claim that this time if his fitness is maintained, he will definitely bring a medal.

And now, after winning the gold medal, preparations are underway for the grand reception of Arshad Nadeem on his return home.
