Placing money in a classic savings account does not bring anything and can even cost money, we don’t teach you anything. But when it comes to finding profitable alternatives, it’s more complicated. A study conducted by Schroders, an independent fund management organization, tells us more regarding the behavior of Belgians with their money.
We thus learn that 70% of Belgians still consider the traditional savings account as “the investment instrument par excellence“. “At the same time, for 54.4% of respondents, the funds seem to represent an attractive alternative to the savings account“, continues the study, which also indicates that young people seem to be the most dynamic.”Fund investing is on the rise. The survey shows that 41% of respondents aged 18 to 34 say they intend to invest in funds, a figure well above the average for respondents (28%). In addition, a mere third of respondents (28%) already invest in shares of listed companies, while a minority (8%) hold government or corporate bonds.“
And when it comes to investing in funds, you still have to choose the ideal path. “Today, investors mainly use their bank (87.8%) and the stock market, with or without the assistance of third parties (38.8%). Pension funds, with 38%, are also very popular.“
And since dad’s bank seems dead, you might as well turn to… mom’s. Because more and more women are investing their money. “28% of women surveyed indicate their intention, probable or certain, to invest in the funds over the next 12 months, compared to 28% of men surveyed“, we learn.
Finally, there is the way to invest your money, but also the organization or fund you choose. And so-called “green” funds are really popular according to Schroders. “33% of respondents say they want to invest in this type of business. The energy transition is at the heart of the news. Just think of the increase in the price of petrol, diesel and gas and the search for alternative energies in order to reduce our dependence on Russian gas and oil. Pharmaceuticals is a popular second investment theme (20%)“, concludes the study.
