From Wednesday, the Stellantis factory in Sochaux will stop working until at least April 14, due to a shortage of gearboxes, reports France Blue Belfort Montbeliard Tuesday, April 4. Almost all employees will be on partial unemployment during this period of stoppage.

If the situation lasts more than 12 days, employees will only be paid up to 84% of their income. A scenario feared by the CGT which requires that each employee be paid 100%. Jérôme Boussard, general secretary of the union for the Sochaux factory, believes that management is entirely responsible for the situation.

“Employees find themselves with their beaks in the water”

He denounces “just-in-time policy” set up by Carlos Tavares, the general manager of Stellantis. “By dint of saying, ‘I need parts but I don’t need them in stock because I pay taxes on stocks’, employees find themselves in the water”, criticizes Jérôme Boussard. According to him, it is necessary to reduce the pace of work and production, to relieve the employees, and “ensure work every day”.

On the Force Ouvrière side, the problem is considered to be linked to relocation and the use of foreign service providers to manufacture parts. “Relocating to French territory is becoming more than urgent”warns Thierry Giroux, FO delegate at Stellantis.

“It is not the fault of the employees but they are the ones who suffer the consequences in terms of the disorganization of their family life.”

The CGT also denounces the fact that, for temporary workers, the first two days of partial unemployment will not be paid. “An unacceptable loss”, according to the union organization which requires that their full salary be paid. The management did not wish to comment on the cessation of activity in the factory.
