The start-up P-Layer creates a glass capable of producing energy while modulating brightness

As is often the case in research, P-Layer’s technology was born by chance. Two teams of researchers from the universities of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) and Southampton in England worked for ten years on new components, to combine the properties of their two specialties: organic semiconductors on the French side and liquid crystals for the English. .

«Instead of a simple change in electrical conductivity, a photovoltaic effect occurred. Light energy is transformed into electrical energy which acts on the properties of the component», explains Thomas Heiser, researcher-inventor within the Strasbourg ICube laboratory (engineering, computer science and imaging) who discovered the concept with Professor Malgosia Kaczmarek from the University of Southampton.
