The start of the 2024 presidential election period in Tunisia

The authority said in a statement that it “has begun monitoring the public space in everything related to electoral affairs, especially with regard to preventing political advertising (Articles 3, 57 and 154 of the electoral law), prohibiting the broadcast and publication of the results of opinion polls that are directly or indirectly related to the elections and studies and press comments related to them through various media outlets (Articles 70 and 156 of the electoral law), and preventing the allocation of a free telephone number in the media or a voice distributor or a call center for the benefit of a candidate or party (Articles 58 and 152 of the electoral law).”

The Elections Commission stressed that it will ensure “enforcing the law on all manifestations that undermine the integrity of the electoral process with the aim of confronting all speeches that include calls for violence, hatred, fanaticism and discrimination, or misleading voters and spreading false news and rumours, or attributing untrue matters with the aim of defaming the electoral commission or others, or tarnishing reputation or undermining honour, dignity or respect, or violating the sanctity of private life and personal data, in accordance with the legislation in force.”

The Commission will also begin, directly and in coordination with the relevant state institutions, to “monitor the financing of political life in general, and in particular the financing of the activities of potential candidates, political parties, and associations related to electoral affairs.”

She stated that this comes “in consideration of the general mandate that the Authority assumes over electoral affairs, in accordance with Article 134 of the Constitution and Articles 2 and 3 of Basic Law No. 23 of 2012 relating to the Independent High Authority for Elections, and in its belief in its constitutional and national duty to preserve the integrity, fairness and transparency of the electoral process.”

It is noteworthy that the submission of nominations for the presidential elections opens starting Monday, July 29, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. and closes on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., according to an announcement published by the authority on Thursday, July 4, in which it provided details of the 2024 presidential election calendar in Tunisia.

On July 2, President Kais Saied issued an order calling on Tunisian voters to vote in the presidential elections.
