The feat was achieved with the use of very high-frequency radio waves, also known as vortex millimeter waves.

A new record in data transmission using 6G technology was set by Chinese researchers, the newspaper reported on February 10. The South China Morning Post.

The team, led by Professor Zhang Chao, from Tsinghua University (Beijing), and made up of specialists from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the mobile phone operator China Unicom, managed to transmit a terabyte of data at a distance of one kilometer in just one second. The experiment was carried out on a wireless communication line installed in a competition complex for the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The feat was achieved with the use of very high frequency radio waves, also known as millimeter vortex waves. Existing cell phones today use two-dimensional electromagnetic waves, while those used by specialists are of three dimensions and they have a shape similar to that of a tornado, they explain from the middle.

Zhang explained that vortex waves add “a new dimension to wireless transmission.” Thus, the experimental line is capable of simultaneously transmitting more than 10,000 high-resolution live broadcasts.

“The most exciting thing is not only the speed. It is regarding introducing a new physical dimension, which can give rise to a whole new world with almost unlimited possibilities,” said an anonymous researcher, who spoke to the media under conditions of anonymity. The specialist added that the established record might be “the start of a revolution“.
