The special unit lays down a police shot at a 22-year-old who was paralysed

The case has been dropped “because no criminal offense is considered proven”, according to the Bureau.

The 22-year-old’s lawyer Brynjar Meling warns that the suspension will be appealed.

– I do not want to go into detail about the allegations, but it is self-explanatory that our client, who has had his life and future prospects largely destroyed, cannot settle for the fact that he is only a victim of unfortunate circumstances, and that there is no misjudgments, neither at the time of the shooting nor before the incident that led to the police action, says Meling to NTB.

Meling says this applies to everything from the moment of the shot itself, to the decision to intervene in the situation, with weapons and unsecured weapons, all the way back to the fact that a decision was made to use a shield, which was designed so that this could lead to shots being fired almost by accident.

– We also consider the importance of how the situation was handled after our client was shot, i.e. how he was carried out and made available to the ambulance.

Lame in the legs

During the campaign last summer, the 22-year-old man was shot in the chest by a police officer from the emergency squad. The man suffered an injury to his spinal cord and is paralyzed in his legs as a result of the shot.

The policeman has explained that the shot went off after his shield came into contact with the trigger of his service weapon.

– The incident appears to be a very unfortunate result of an unlikely coincidence of events, for which the police officer cannot be held criminally responsible, says the decision from the Bureau.

Drug case

The Bureau believes that it can hardly be criticized that the police had not previously uncovered the risk that existed. Thus, it cannot be a qualified deviation that amounts to a criminal offence, they state.

– The shield that was used has relatively sharp edges, also in areas where weapons are to be used close to, while the gun that was used has several characteristics that indicate that the trigger is relatively easily affected. The pistol has a large trigger guard, which makes it easier for foreign objects to come into contact with the trigger, which also has a shorter travel than, for example, the police’s ordinary service pistol, they write in the decision.

The background for the police action was suspicion of drug offences, where three people were charged. The police considered the three to be part of a criminal environment where there could be firearms, and where associated persons had been involved in shooting incidents in public space.
