On Monday, the Spanish women’s national football team revealed its roster for the next two matches, in which the coach, Montserrat Tomé, excluded player Jenny Hermoso, who was involved in the famous incident at the World Cup with the resigned Football Federation president, Luis Rubiales.
Tomé said during a Spanish Football Federation press conference, before the matches between Sweden and Switzerland on the 22nd and 26th of this month, that the reason for excluding Hermoso is that this is “the best way to protect her.”
The Spanish team will play two matches in the European Nations League qualifying tournament for the Paris Olympics next year, amid the majority of international female players refusing to play for the national team, following the case of Rubiales kissing Hermoso at the World Cup awards ceremony last month in Sydney.
Because of the “World Cup kiss”… an order was issued to prevent Rubiales from approaching the Spain national team star
The sacked president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, denied during a preliminary hearing on Friday the allegations of sexual assault and coercion made by footballer Gheni Hermoso over a non-consensual kiss, the public prosecutor said.
Tomé confirmed at the conference that she spoke to the players before announcing her squad, and said: “I trust that the players are professionals, and I am sure that they will do their job well, as they have done so for a long time.”
She continued: “They have just become world champions, and they carry love for the national team, and I know that they will be with us.”
She added: “We are starting a new era in the national team. This is a good and beautiful thing. All female players have the opportunity to be here and they all have the same opportunity.”
The Barcelona and national team player who won the Ballon d’Or for the best player in the world, Alexia Potias, published a statement on the “X” platform, in which she confirmed that the players do not want to represent the national team at the present time.
She wrote, according to Agence France-Presse: “What was stated in our press statement last Friday clarifies, without any other possible explanation, our firm desire not to be summoned for justified reasons. These statements remain in full force.”
“The Kiss Scandal”… Questions surround the Spanish men’s national team coach
Spain men’s national team coach Luis de la Fuente said that he and his team will “focus only on football” following being bombarded with questions on Monday regarding the resignation of Spanish Federation President Luis Rubiales due to the kiss scandal.
This comes following the decision of the new national team coach to recall 15 players from the World Cup-winning team last month, even though they did not end the strike due to the crisis.
On Friday, 39 players, including 21 out of 23 who won the world title, confirmed in a statement that the conditions were “not met” to play once more in the national team.
The players called for “a comprehensive reform of Spanish football bodies.” They stressed that Rubiales’ resignation and the dismissal of the women’s national team coach, Jorge Villeda, whose tactical plans they criticized, “are not enough.”
