Spain – The Spanish government announced that the Football Association was placed under guardianship following it was involved in a corruption case that followed the scandal of its former president Luis Rubiales’ forced kiss on the mouth of a player on the women’s national team.
The Supreme Council for Sports, affiliated with the Ministry of Sports, noted, “The government adopted this decision to redress the dangerous situation of the Spanish Football Federation, so that the entity can begin the renewal phase in a climate of stability.”
The Council said in a statement, “The Supervision, Normalization and Representation Committee established by the Supreme Council for Sports” and run by “independent persons” will “trust the Spanish Football Federation in the coming months” for the “interest of Spain,” which is nominated to organize the 2030 World Cup in partnership with Portugal and Morocco.
Spain’s top football body was rocked by a corruption scandal following Rubiales forcibly kissed national team player Jenny Hermoso following Spain won the Women’s World Cup in Sydney last August. This led to his resignation from his position and the subjecting of him and interim president Pedro Rocha to investigation as part of a corruption scandal.
An investigation in Spain’s Supreme Sports Court indicated that the local football federation had taken “extremely dangerous” decisions that “exceeded its powers.”
The report led to the decision of the Supreme Sports Council to place the Football Association under guardianship.
In March, the federation sacked several directors linked to corruption investigations, while police searched the federation’s headquarters on the outskirts of Madrid along with Rubiales’ properties in Granada.
This concerns contracts signed by Rubiales to hold the Spanish Super Cup in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, among other things.
Elections for the presidency of the federation are scheduled to be held next May 6, noting that Rocha is the only candidate.
