On October 3, the Vox party presented its proposal, to which it added an amendment formulated by the PP.
The intention was for the Congress of Deputies to make the following message public and official:
“As a representative of the Spanish people, and with the utmost respect for the brother people of Mexico (sic), I condemn the attitude expressed by the president (sic) of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum, against the figure of the head of State, His Majesty. Felipe VI and, therefore, the Spanish people.”
It was also proposed to urge “the government to disapprove the presence of Spanish political representatives at the inauguration” of Claudia Sheinbaum because, according to these political organizations, it represented “an attack on the figure” of the king.
It also proposed that the government “take appropriate measures to defend the historical legacy of Spain in Mexico (sic).”

How does Dr. Carlos Mendoza view the implications of Spanish Congress’s rejection of the proposal to condemn Claudia Sheinbaum for her inauguration?
**Interview with Dr. Carlos Mendoza, International Relations Expert**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us, Dr. Mendoza. Let’s dive into the recent rejection by the Spanish Congress of the proposal to condemn Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for not inviting King Felipe VI to her inauguration. Why do you think this proposal was rejected?
**Dr. Mendoza:** Thank you for having me. The rejection of the proposal stems from several factors. Firstly, it highlights the differing political ideologies within the Spanish Congress. The coalition of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and various regional nationalists aimed to prioritize diplomatic relations over what they perceive as politically charged rhetoric initiated by Vox and the Popular Party (PP).
**Interviewer:** Vox’s leader criticized Sheinbaum’s actions as a continuation of negative sentiments towards Spain, echoing rhetoric used against Mexico’s President López Obrador. What does this indicate about Vox’s political strategy?
**Dr. Mendoza:** Vox has consistently adopted a nationalist stance, positioning itself against perceived slights to Spanish pride. By framing Sheinbaum’s actions as offensive, they aim to galvanize their base around feelings of national grievance. It’s a populist strategy that seeks to foster discontent toward foreign leaders who are seen as disrespectful. However, it seems that this approach did not resonate with a majority in the Congress.
**Interviewer:** The rejection of this proposal also highlighted a divide in Spain regarding relations with Mexico. In your view, how should Spain approach its diplomatic relationship with Mexico moving forward?
**Dr. Mendoza:** It’s crucial for Spain to approach its relationship with Mexico with an emphasis on mutual respect and cooperation. Both countries share historical ties, but focusing on constructive dialogue that promotes trade, cultural exchange, and joint efforts to address issues like immigration and drug trafficking would be more beneficial than engaging in political theatrics. Spain’s leadership needs to prioritize stability and collaboration over populism.
**Interviewer:** what impact do you think this rejection might have on Spain’s reputation internationally, particularly with Latin American countries?
**Dr. Mendoza:** This incident could signal to Latin American nations that Spain is willing to resist internal pressures that could jeopardize diplomatic relations. As many Latin American countries seek to assert their autonomy and diminish historical colonial ties, Spain’s decision could be interpreted as a move toward a more mature partnership that values dialogue over confrontation. It may foster goodwill and open doors for future cooperation.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Mendoza, for sharing your insights on this significant international issue.
**Dr. Mendoza:** My pleasure! Thank you for having me.
