The Spanish Congress rejects a proposal against Claudia Sheinbaum

MADRID, Spain.— The Congress of Deputies of Spain rejected the proposal promoted by the Vox parties y Popular (PP) in which it was called to condemn the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardofor not inviting your inauguration al king Philip VIhead of the Spanish State.

With 19 votes against Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and the Catalan, Basque and Galician nationalists rejected the proposal, which obtained 17 votes in favor.

Vox stance

On October 3, the Vox party presented its proposal, to which it added an amendment formulated by the PP.

The intention was for the Congress of Deputies to make the following message public and official:

“As a representative of the Spanish people, and with the utmost respect for the brother people of Mexico (sic), I condemn the attitude expressed by the president (sic) of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum, against the figure of the head of State, His Majesty. Felipe VI and, therefore, the Spanish people.”

It was also proposed to urge “the government to disapprove the presence of Spanish political representatives at the inauguration” of Claudia Sheinbaum because, according to these political organizations, it represented “an attack on the figure” of the king.

It also proposed that the government “take appropriate measures to defend the historical legacy of Spain in Mexico (sic).”

Position of the Spanish Government

At the end of September, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, established his position regarding the exclusion of the king from the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum and assured that no representative of his administration would attend the event.

How⁣ does Dr. Carlos Mendoza view ‌the implications of ⁣Spanish⁢ Congress’s rejection of the proposal to condemn⁣ Claudia Sheinbaum for her⁣ inauguration?

**Interview ⁤with⁣ Dr. Carlos Mendoza, International ⁢Relations Expert**

**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us, Dr. Mendoza. Let’s dive into the recent rejection by the Spanish Congress of the ‌proposal to condemn Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for not inviting King Felipe VI⁣ to her inauguration. Why‌ do you think this proposal was rejected?

**Dr. Mendoza:** Thank you for ⁤having me. The rejection of the proposal stems from several factors. Firstly, it highlights ‍the ⁤differing political⁣ ideologies within the Spanish Congress. The coalition of⁢ the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and various regional nationalists⁤ aimed⁢ to⁤ prioritize diplomatic relations over what they perceive as politically charged ⁤rhetoric initiated by Vox⁤ and the Popular Party ⁣(PP).

**Interviewer:** Vox’s leader criticized Sheinbaum’s actions as a continuation of negative ⁤sentiments ‌towards ‌Spain, echoing rhetoric used against Mexico’s‌ President López Obrador. What does this indicate about Vox’s political strategy?

**Dr. Mendoza:** Vox has consistently adopted a nationalist stance, positioning ⁣itself⁢ against perceived slights to Spanish pride. By ‍framing⁣ Sheinbaum’s actions as offensive, they aim⁢ to galvanize their base around feelings of national grievance. It’s a populist ⁢strategy‌ that seeks to ⁣foster‍ discontent⁤ toward foreign leaders who are seen as disrespectful. However,⁢ it seems that this‍ approach did not resonate ⁢with a⁣ majority in the⁤ Congress.

**Interviewer:** The rejection of‌ this ‍proposal also ⁣highlighted a divide in Spain regarding ⁤relations with Mexico. In your⁤ view, how should Spain‍ approach its diplomatic relationship with⁤ Mexico moving forward?

**Dr. Mendoza:** It’s crucial for Spain ‌to approach its relationship with Mexico ⁤with an emphasis on mutual respect and cooperation. Both countries share⁣ historical ties, but focusing on constructive dialogue that promotes trade, cultural exchange, and joint efforts to⁣ address‍ issues like immigration and drug trafficking would be more beneficial than engaging in political theatrics. Spain’s leadership ‍needs to prioritize ‍stability and collaboration over populism.

**Interviewer:** what ⁣impact do you think ⁢this rejection might ⁤have on Spain’s reputation⁣ internationally,⁣ particularly ⁢with⁣ Latin American countries?

**Dr. Mendoza:** This‍ incident could‌ signal to Latin American nations that Spain is willing to‌ resist ‌internal pressures that ‌could jeopardize diplomatic relations. As many Latin⁢ American countries seek to assert‍ their autonomy and diminish historical colonial ties, ‍Spain’s decision could be interpreted‌ as a move toward a more⁢ mature partnership⁢ that values dialogue over confrontation. It may foster⁢ goodwill and open doors for future cooperation.

**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Mendoza, for sharing‍ your⁤ insights on this significant international issue.

**Dr. Mendoza:** My pleasure! Thank⁤ you⁣ for⁤ having me.
