The Spanish Congress rejects a proposal against Claudia Sheinbaum

MADRID, Spain.— The Congress of Deputies of Spain rejected the proposal promoted by the Vox parties y Popular (PP) in which it was called to condemn the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardofor not inviting your inauguration al king Philip VIhead of the Spanish State.

With 19 votes against Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) and the Catalan, Basque and Galician nationalists rejected the proposal, which obtained 17 votes in favor.

Vox stance

On October 3, the Vox party presented its proposal, to which it added an amendment formulated by the PP.

The intention was for the Congress of Deputies to make the following message public and official:

“As a representative of the Spanish people, and with the utmost respect for the brother people of Mexico (sic), I condemn the attitude expressed by the president (sic) of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum, against the figure of the head of State, His Majesty. Felipe VI and, therefore, the Spanish people.”

It was also proposed to urge “the government to disapprove the presence of Spanish political representatives at the inauguration” of Claudia Sheinbaum because, according to these political organizations, it represented “an attack on the figure” of the king.

It also proposed that the government “take appropriate measures to defend the historical legacy of Spain in Mexico (sic).”

Position of the Spanish Government

At the end of September, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, established his position regarding the exclusion of the king from the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum and assured that no representative of his administration would attend the event.

What were the main ⁢reasons behind the rejection of Vox’s proposal to condemn Claudia Sheinbaum?

⁣ **Interview with Political Analyst⁤ Clara Jiménez on Spain’s Rejection of Vox’s Proposal⁤ to Condemn Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum**

**Interviewer:** ⁣Thank you for joining ‍us today, Clara. The Congress of ‍Deputies recently voted against a proposal ⁢by Vox and the Popular Party to condemn Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for not inviting King Felipe ⁣VI to her inauguration. ⁢What does⁢ this rejection say about ‍the current political climate ⁣in Spain?

**Clara Jiménez:** ⁣Thank you for having me. The rejection of Vox’s proposal highlights a significant⁣ division within Spanish politics. While Vox‍ and the Popular Party ‌framed the proposal as a defense of Spanish honor, the overwhelming opposition from the ⁤Spanish Socialist Workers ‌Party and regional⁣ parties suggests a broader reluctance to engage in confrontations with Mexico, particularly ⁣given‌ its‌ complex historical context.

**Interviewer:** Vox’s proposal cites concerns about President López Obrador’s governance in ⁤Mexico. How do you ‍read their stance?

**Clara Jiménez:**⁢ Vox has consistently positioned itself‌ as a hardline opponent of what they see as failures in Mexican leadership, particularly regarding crime⁤ and corruption. By linking Sheinbaum’s actions to those of López Obrador, they’re ‍trying to⁣ establish a narrative that equates her administration ⁣with a negative trajectory. However, ⁢this approach ‌often overlooks the political realities and nuances ⁣within Mexican ⁣society itself.

**Interviewer:**⁣ The proposal also included an amendment calling for a solemn message condemning Sheinbaum’s actions. What impact do ‌you think this kind of rhetoric has⁤ on Spain-Mexico relations?

**Clara Jiménez:** Such rhetoric ⁤can be detrimental to bilateral relations. It ⁢risks inflaming nationalist sentiments and could be perceived as interference in⁢ Mexico’s internal affairs.⁣ Spain and Mexico share a historical and cultural bond,⁣ and these⁢ kinds of⁢ political ⁤moves stray away from a more cooperative relationship. It’s crucial for both‍ nations to engage in dialogue rather than escalate tensions.

**Interviewer:** What does this incident tell us about ‍the role of nationalism‌ in Spain’s contemporary political discourse?

**Clara Jiménez:** Nationalism remains a ⁤potent force in Spanish politics, particularly ⁣within ⁤parties like⁣ Vox. Their reaction⁣ to Sheinbaum’s omission‍ signals an attempt to rally support by invoking national ⁣pride and historical grievances. ⁤However, as ⁣seen in this ⁣vote, there is also a ⁢clear pushback against using history⁣ for political currency, reflecting evolving⁣ attitudes among the electorate, especially in ⁢favor of ⁣dialogue and mutual respect.

**Interviewer:** Thank you, Clara, for sharing your insights on this⁢ important issue. It will be interesting to⁣ see how this debate ⁣unfolds.

**Clara Jiménez:** Thank you‍ for having me. I look forward⁣ to discussing further developments in this area.
