(Daejeon = Yonhap News) Reporter Junho Kim = The Korean Society for Space Science, the Society of Aerospace Systems Engineering, the Korean Astronomical Society, and the Korean Society for Aeronautics and Space Sciences, the leading academic organizations in the domestic space field, announced on the 20th that they support the asteroid ‘Apophis’ exploration project.
The 370-meter asteroid Apophis is expected to pass 31,600 km above Earth in April 2029, seven years later.
This project is being promoted by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Korea Aerospace Research Institute, and Defense Science Research Institute.
Officials from the four societies said, “Scientists at home and abroad are paying attention to this rare phenomenon that occurs once in 20,000 years and various physics predicted at this time.” It will secure valuable technological assets that will be used in future industries including guidance, navigation and control,” he said.
Currently, 125 domestic astronomers, space scientists, and space engineers have signed the ‘Apophis Mission Support Homepage’, which the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute has been operating since June 2021.
