Barcelona (Spain), Jul 8 (EFE).- Social commitment to combat inequality, climate change and lack of access to culture unites the latest winners of the Princess of Girona Awards 2024including Venezuelan chemist Yarivith González and Guatemalan nanotechnologist Susana Arrachea.
Next Wednesday, they will receive the award from the Spanish royal family, a recognition that aims to inspire an entire generation.
The winners, who appeared before the media on Monday in Barcelona following their recognition was announced in February, are also the entrepreneur Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros, the architect Daniel Millor, the actress Vicky Luengo and the biologist and ecologist Moisés Expósito-Alonso, all of them Spanish.
Asked regarding the challenges and values of her generation, Guatemalan Arrechea highlighted the willingness of young people to make a transition towards ending prejudices and stereotypes that are sexist, racist and otherwise discriminatory.
“I think we all have in common the desire to make a positive impact on the world (…). A change in which we, the youngest, certainly want to participate,” said one of the winners of the international category for her work empowering indigenous women.
Daniel Millor, who is responsible for several social inclusion and sustainable housing development projects in Spain, said that faced with the huge problem of inequality, all young people must get involved.
For his part, Espinosa de los Monteros, winner of CreaEmpresa for his business projects on the environment and urban mobility, pointed out that beyond the most “obvious” challenges, such as global warming and inequalities, there is another major worrying reality, which is “mental health.”
Luengo, whose “naturalness” was praised by the jury, also mentioned the importance of young people feeling that culture is part of their identity and that, through education, they are given space to develop artistically.
They all agreed to reject the growing political polarisation and hate speech in public spaces.
The awards will be presented in the Spanish town of Lloret de Mar in a ceremony attended by the King and Queen of Spain, Felipe VI and Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofría.
González, for her research into recycling lithium batteries and her work in disseminating science in schools in Latin American countries, and Arrachea were awarded the 2024 Princess of Girona Foundation International Prize in the Research category, which for the first time is aimed at young talents from Latin America.
