Meteorologists predicted that heavy snowfall will start in Vilnius from 10 o’clock in the morning. It started to snow, but not as much as feared. It snowed all day in the capital, but the streets were passable and there were no major traffic jams.

But in the evening, the snow storm raged. After 19:00, the snowfall increased, the wind picked up and started blowing snow. The streets were already covered with driven snow, but the cars were moving, albeit more slowly. Meanwhile, as 20 o’clock approached, the sidewalks were no longer there, there were only so-called tracks, and in some places they were no longer there.

Meteorologists predicted that during the day of Wednesday and Thursday night, the most precipitation (up to 10-15 mm) will fall in the eastern districts. Also, it will snow on the coast, about 4-7 mm. 1 mm of precipitation corresponds to a 1 cm thick layer of loose (dry) snow.

The Directorate of Motor Roads of Lithuania announced in the evening that traffic conditions are more difficult due to snow in the districts of Utena, Molėtai, Švenčioni and Ignalina, where most of the roads are covered with a layer of compacted or driven snow, in many places up to 10 cm, slippery.

Most of the roads in Western Lithuania and Vilnius, Varėna, Zarasai and Panevėžys districts are wet, rutted, and slippery. District roads with lower traffic intensity remain rutted, covered with a layer of compacted, fallen snow.

Road maintenance mechanisms are in operation on the road sections, but drivers are asked to take into account the condition of the road surface and choose a safe speed rather than the maximum permissible speed and keep a greater than usual safe distance.
