There are several ways to determine the size of a building. At 828 meters high, we find the Burj Khalifa, built in 2008 in Dubai. The longest construction is still the Great Wall of China with no less than 20,000 kilometers in length. But there is a construction that remains surprising…

The largest building is more than impressive!

In terms of usable area and volume, one building surpasses all others. It is neither a particularly long nor tall construction, and not even a monument. This building comes straight from China, in the provincial city of Chengdu.

The New Century Global Center was built between 2010 and 2013, by Deng Honga Chinese billionaire and director of the Entertainment Travel Group. The building is still the largest ever built, with a usable area of 1.7 million square meters (170 hectares). Inside, we find an amusement park, cinemas, shopping centers, or even theaters.

The building reaches a height of 100 meters with 18 floors. The New Century Global Center also has an artificial beach of 5000 square meters.

The building was erected in 2013 to celebrate the power and vibrancy of Chengdu and its 14 million people.

China is not at its first attempt in terms of large constructions, since the “Yinjianbuhan” project, the longest tunnel in the world, is planned for the next few years. China wants to show its growing power by building ever taller, ever wider buildings.

What can fit in so much space?

It’s hard to really imagine 1.7 million square meters (170 hectares). To give you an order of magnitude, the Vatican, in the heart of Italy, represents only 440,000 square meters. In itself, we can put 4 times the Vatican inside this building!

The New Century Global Center is the leader in two categories: with its 1,760,000 square meters of surface, it takes the lead in front of the Mecca Royal Clock (1,575,000 square meters) in Saudi Arabia. But also in volume, since this colossal building has 20,000,000 cubic meters, and beats the record of the Boeing Everett factory with its 13,385,378 cubic meters, in the suburbs of Seattle.

The smallest country in the world enters the largest building in the world… 4 times!

This Chinese building is therefore 4 times the size of the Vatican City, and no less than 20 Sydney Opera Houses can be placed inside. Even if the appearance of the New Century Global Center does not look like much, it is a monstrous building where you can get lost for several days.

As said before, this crazy project was started by billionaire Deng Hong, one of the biggest fortunes in the world. Following numerous rumors and accusations, the latter was forced to withdraw from public space because of corruption cases in several strata of Chinese politics.

Even though this person no longer runs the place at all, the place has been somewhat tainted by the gentleman’s reputation. The Chinese government then took over the reins of the New Century Global Center, in order to erase this image.

Nevertheless, the New Century Global Center remains the largest building in the world and hosts an astronomical amount of activity, in the heart of the Chinese hinterland.
