In this series we describe the six most important cold viruses and explain what makes them so special
It starts harmlessly, with typical cold symptoms, and the children’s body temperature is often slightly elevated. But suddenly, following a few days have passed, they wake up at night with a dry, barking cough; When they take a breath, they gasp and whistle so loudly that parents have the feeling that the children are suffocating. This so-called pseudo croup attack is very frightening for parents. The relief that follows when you carry the children outside into the cold air or sit them in front of an open refrigerator is all the greater: the wheezing and coughing disappear as quickly as they came because the swelling in the respiratory tract goes down. Pseudocroup attacks are rarely life-threatening, but you should still go to an ambulance as a precaution. Children between the ages of three months and five years are almost exclusively affected. By this age, almost every child has experienced an infection with all five types of parainfluenza virus (type 1 is responsible for pseudocroup), often along with a middle ear infection. In adults, the infection usually takes the form of a mild cold because their immune system recognizes the virus from childhood.
