The situation on the roads is easing – train traffic continues to be disrupted

As the snowfall subsided, the situation on the roads in Austria calmed down somewhat on Sunday night. Due to fallen trees, numerous road closures were still in force in the morning, for example on the B154, near the border between Salzburg and Upper Austria, or the A12 in the Innsbruck area. According to ÖBB, train traffic will be affected for a longer period of time. It is recommended that non-urgent trips be postponed.

When asked by the APA, the ÖAMTC said that there were countless closures throughout Austria due to storm damage, as well as chain requirements. However, the accident that occurred overnight was within the normal range. There were many defects and vehicles that were poorly equipped for the weather got stuck on the way. The Vienna outer ring motorway A21, which was closed in both directions for hours on Saturday, has now been reopened to traffic.

Despite the more relaxed weather conditions in Bavaria, there were still no trains running at Munich Central Station early on Sunday. It was not possible to travel from Austria to the Bavarian capital by train. The Ennstal route near Schladming was also closed in sections. Meanwhile, Munich Airport resumed flight operations as scheduled at 6 a.m., the airport announced on its website. However, there will “continue to be restrictions on air traffic”.

There will be no further fresh snow in large parts of Austria on Sunday, with only a few flakes expected to fall in the next few hours, especially in Lower Austria and Styria. But it will be very cold: the meteorologists expect lows of around minus 15 degrees in some areas in the evening and night hours. It will continue to be cold on Monday and Tuesday. Black ice is to be expected, and there is also an increased risk of avalanches in the ridge areas.
