North Korea confirmed that the intercontinental ballistic missile launched while Chairman Kim Jong-un was in attendance was the Hwasong-17 type.
North Korea broke the ‘moratorium’ it had promised itself and eventually crossed the red line.
As president-elect Yoon Seok-yeol, he faced a major North Korean provocation before he even took office, and he was faced with an unfavorable security environment.
On the day of North Korea’s ICBM launch, the transition committee strongly condemned it as a “serious provocation that threatens security” and President-elect Yoon’s direct message is also interpreted as a response considering the seriousness of the situation.
President-elect Yoon issued a firm message saying, “I warn North Korea seriously” and that “there is nothing to be gained by provocation.”
In a phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he said, “There is great public concern as tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in the region are rapidly escalating due to North Korea’s serious provocations.”
President-elect Yoon’s message seems to be resolute yet relatively cautious.
<김은혜 / 당선인 대변인> “I think it is customary and our duty to stand behind Banbo so that we can manage foreign affairs and security in a coordinated manner, and that the command of the military supreme commander can be made clearly.”
North Korea’s provocation of ‘super strong precipitation’ is likely to affect to some extent the direction of the new government’s future policy toward North Korea, which is in the midst of a transition committee.
The core of President-elect Yoon’s security policy is ‘peace through strength’.
We emphasize the strong national defense power, judging that true peace comes only when we have deterrence.
As Yoon-Elect, he also faced the task of preventing further North Korean provocations and stably managing the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
It is noteworthy how President-elect Yoon, who has been put to the test, will overcome the security turbulence through a new foreign and security policy toward North Korea.
