The shipwreck occurred in Lake Maracaibo, near Block 1 of the Tía Juana municipality of Zulia state. The accident occurred due to poor weather conditions that affected the area at the time of the accident.

At least 40 people traveling by catamaran from Cubagua to Margarita (Nueva Esparta), were rescued on the night of February 12, 2024, after the boat in which they were traveling fractured due to strong waves.

The people tied themselves to the boat to stay afloat until the time of rescue. Later, they were rescued and taken back to Cubagua.

The director of Citizen Security of Nueva Esparta, Aldalberto Orta, confirmed that all the passengers were rescued alive.

On Tuesday, February 13, the Venezuelan Coast Guard took the rescued people to the port of Punta de Piedras, on the island of Margarita.

“The 38 passengers who were on board the catamaran that suffered a structural accident last night leaving Cubagua, around 7:00 pm, are already in Margarita. In the early hours of today, 4 came aboard a Venezuelan Coast Guard boat and the rest arrived at the port of Punta de Piedras,” the media indicated on its account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

The authorities attributed this fact to bad weather conditions.
