Since the film was a stunning success and earned critical acclaim, of course they immediately began dissecting the film and every scene in it. Thus, the role and importance of the cat became the subject of analysis. They speculated whether it was a metaphor for Vito’s cunning nature, or perhaps they wanted to show that behind his soft and calm exterior lurked brutal acts?

“The cat in Marlon’s hand was not planned. I saw the cat running around the studio and without saying a word I grabbed it and put it in his hand.”
