The film The Godfather is one of the most significant works in film history: the acting, the iconic scenes and the presentation of the cruel underworld and its patriarchal system all contributed to the global recognition of the film and the two subsequent works.

Since the film was a stunning success and earned critical acclaim, of course they immediately began dissecting the film and every scene in it. Thus, the role and importance of the cat became the subject of analysis. They speculated whether it was a metaphor for Vito’s cunning nature, or perhaps they wanted to show that behind his soft and calm exterior lurked brutal acts?
As it turned out, the director Francis Ford Coppola actually had nothing like this in mind, the presence of the cat did not have such a deep meaning, in fact: the cat should not have been in the scene at all.
Coppola revealed in an interview:
“The cat in Marlon’s hand was not planned. I saw the cat running around the studio and without saying a word I grabbed it and put it in his hand.”
The furry character was a stray cat in the area and seemed especially friendly, which is how he ended up in the studio and eventually in the finished film itself. At the same time, we all agree that the film wouldn’t be the same without the cat, so we’re very glad that he went that way.
