The shortage of important medicines in pharmacies has brought the Minister of Health to account, following a written question addressed by the parliamentary group of the Progress and Socialism Party in the House of Representatives to the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Ait Taleb, in this regard.

In this context, the party’s parliamentary representative, Lobna Saghiri, raised the issue of “the return of the problem of the shortage of chronic disease medications to the forefront again, and this time it concerns the anti-thyroid drug “Levothyrox.”

The Book Party parliamentarian pointed out that “the suffering of thyroid patients, whether those suffering from hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, has increased due to the interruption of a vital drug in the pharmaceutical market, public hospitals and pharmacies for several days, without knowing the reason or the dates of its receipt.”

Al-Saghiri warned of the difficult risks to patients as a result of the lack of this type of medication, such as “enlargement of the heart muscle, which cannot return to its normal size except after taking the treatment. Also, stopping taking this medication in the case of thyroid inactivity or laziness, and not secreting the hormone, can lead to a decrease in thyroxine levels in the body, according to what experts and specialists say.”

The same parliamentarian pointed out that “Law No. 17.04, which is the constitution of medicines, stipulates that the government is obligated to provide certain stocks of medicines, including medicines for treating thyroid patients, for at least six months.”

Saghiri wondered about the reasons behind the interruption of a vital drug for thyroid patients from the pharmaceutical market, and about the measures taken by the Ministry of Ait Taleb to stop the interruption of drugs for chronic diseases, stressing in this regard the need to reveal the steps taken by the Ministry to ensure the regular supply of drugs to the national market.
