The Senegalese goal of self-sufficiency in rice in the face of Indian export restrictions

India, one of the world’s leading rice exporters, has announced restrictions on its exports. For Senegal, this decision is a boost to achieve the goal that the country has set itself for more than ten years: self-sufficiency in rice production. It is also a threat: for the time being, Senegal needs “900,000 tonnes” of exported rice to “stabilize the price of rice at the national level” according to the coordinator of the national rice self-sufficiency programme.
