The Senegalese diplomat, Abdoulaye Bathily has been officially named the new special envoy of the UN secretary general for Libya and head of the United Nations support mission for this country (UNSMIL).

He thus replaces the Slovak Jan Kubis who had resigned from his post in November 2021, that is to say a month before the holding of a presidential election in Libya scheduled for the month of December of the same year before being returned sine die.

The former Senegalese minister will have to try in turn to reconcile the points of view between the brother-enemies in Libya, a country torn apart by power struggles for more than a decade.

This appointment is welcomed in Algiers, which welcomes “a judicious choice” by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressing “his desire to cooperate closely with Abdoulaye Bathily to carry out the noble mission entrusted to him”.

“Algeria welcomes the news of the appointment of Professor Abdoulaye Bathily as Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The same source also expressed the position of the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding this appointment.

“The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who had the opportunity to personally discuss with Professor Bathily the Libyan crisis and other sources of tension in Africa, is delighted with his choice and wishes to assure the new Special Representative for Libya of its full support,” the document stressed.

The Algerian Head of State, added the same source, “congratulated the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, for this judicious choice and the Security Council for the unanimous approval of this appointment by its members. “.
