Mirroring the position adopted by the governors, the interblock of senators from Together for Change managed to seal unity in the midst of the open crisis with the electoral defeat on Sunday, although within the bench there are differences regarding the position to be adopted facing the runoff between Sergio Massa (Unión por la Patria) and Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza).
The bench headed by Alfredo Cornejo from Mendoza held a brief meeting this Thursday in the Upper House and agreed to maintain the seal where the PRO, the UCR and provincial expressions coexist, and to constitute itself as the main opposition once morest the current and future governments.
“The interblock of Together for Change in the Senate of the Nation ratifies its unity and responsible commitment to the future legislative agenda,” indicates the statement released following the meeting, and adds: “Citizens have placed us in the place of opposition and we will be in charge of fulfilling that role to control the present and next government administration.”
However, at the time of the definition regarding the runoff there are different positions: while the radical Martín Lousteau leads the neutral position together with the head of the party, Gerardo Morales, the head of the PRO bloc, the missionary Humberto Schiavoni, spoke out this Thursday in favor of Milei.
“Mauricio Macri’s commitment to change cannot be doubted in any way. “I support and accompany the decision of Patricia Bullrich and Luis Petri, which shows us that neutrality is not an option for this Argentina destroyed by populism,” the legislator published on social networks.
Vacant unit and leadership
“What was the business of breaking the deadlock? The interblock was the only space in these two years that had not been broken. That of deputies had broken up, the thing between Horacio (Rodríguez Larreta) and Patricia had been a mess, and we, despite everything, were able to maintain a relationship,” a senator who participated in the meeting told this medium.
The same source confided that the meeting was “harmonious” and denied that there had been criticism of Bullrich and Macri, such as those that were heard this Wednesday in the Radical Committee. “There was even (José) Torello, who is like Macri’s brother, and Guadalupe Tagliaferri, who is 100% Horacio, and it was also harmonious,” he said.
After sealing the unity, the interbloc must now face a complex discussion over leadership, since on December 10 it will be left without leadership: Cornejo will assume the governorship of Mendoza; Macrista Schiavoni ends his term; and the head of the radical bloc, Luis Naidenoff, might not renew his seat and Congress was also dismissed.
After the electoral collapse last Sunday, with the legislative change Together for Change will go from the current 33 senators to 24, remaining below Unión por la Patria, which will have 33 and will be the first minority, just four senators from the necessary quorum to session.
The Peronist interbloc had been made up of 32 seats, but the final scrutiny in the province of San Juan determined that they will add one more seat in that province, which they took from La Libertad Avanza. In this way, the libertarian bloc will have seven representatives instead of eight.
Those elected by the majority are the current governor of San Juan, Sergio Uñac, and the camper María Celeste Giménez, while Bruno Olivera will take office for La Libertad Avanza. The one who was left out due to that force is Mariana Coria.
In tune with governors
The position adopted by the senators is the same one expressed this Wednesday by the elected and current governors of Together for Change, who gave a strong show of unity in a meeting held at the Buenos Aires headquarters of Banco de Corrientes.
“We share the decision of the governors of Together for Change to strengthen the work in unity and consolidate the future of the coalition,” the document indicates.
In the conclave of senators, Cornejo and Mariana Juri from Mendoza were present; Naidenoff from Formosa; the missionary Schiavoni; the porteños Lousteau and Tagliaferri; the Buenos Aires residents Torello and Gladys González; Carolina Losada and Dionisio Scarpin from Santa Fe; Carmen Álvarez Rivero from Córdoba; Mario Fiad from Jujuy; and the Pampas Daniel Kroneberger and Victoria Huala.
