The amendments would provide for the possibility for soldiers with a category B driver’s license to drive military vehicles, including categories other than category B, after they have been prepared and a document confirming this has been issued.
One of the conservative initiators, Vilius Semeška, who presented the amendments, said that as the army acquires more and more tactical and logistical vehicles, there is a shortage of soldiers who have the right to drive category C vehicles.
“Of the conscripts called up for permanent mandatory initial military service in 2022, 788 had the right to drive category B vehicles and only 18 – category C vehicles,” said V. Semeška.
The parliamentarian also noted that in times of peace, military transport is mainly driven in training ranges, and when there is a need to participate in public traffic, it is usually driven in convoys. The parliamentarians point out that the amendments have been coordinated with the Ministry of National Defense.
The amendments were prepared by members of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats faction V. Semeška, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, Arvydas Pocius, Valdas Rakutis, social democrats Dovilė Šakalienė, Kęstutis Vilkauskas, Eugenijus Sabutis, representative of the Liberal movement Virgilijus Alekna.
55 members of the Seimas voted for these amendments this week after they were presented, there were no votes against, 18 MPs abstained. Next, the project will be considered by the Law and Order Committee of the Seimas, and it should return to the Seimas Hall for consideration at the beginning of November.
